Explore the magical cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula

Imagine gliding through crystal-clear freshwater, surrounded by ancient limestone formations and incredible natural light. Diving in cenotes takes you into a world unlike anything you’ll experience on a typical reef dive. With DUNE Mexico’s experienced guides, you can discover these fascinating underwater environments and enjoy an adventure suited to your certification and experience.

Discover One of the World's Most Fascinating Underground Worlds

Over millions of years, rainwater slowly dissolved the limestone beneath the Yucatán Peninsula, creating an extensive network of underground passages and rivers. As parts of the ground collapsed, they revealed natural openings known as cenotes, giving you a glimpse into this remarkable hidden world.

When you dive into a cenote, you’ll discover more than just exceptionally clear water. Depending on the site, you may encounter impressive stalactites and stalagmites, towering limestone columns and beautiful sunlight filtering through openings above. Some cenotes also feature a halocline, where freshwater meets saltwater, creating fascinating visual effects underwater.

Cenotes also hold deep cultural significance. Many were sacred to the ancient Maya, who considered them important sources of water and places of spiritual meaning. Exploring these environments gives you a chance to appreciate both their geological beauty and their place in the region’s history.

Find Your Cenote Adventure

Every cenote has its own character, from dramatic rock formations to enchanting light effects. Whether this is your first cenote experience or you already have plenty of diving experience, choosing the right site for your training and comfort is essential.

With an Open Water Diver certification, you can enjoy diving in cenotes on selected guided routes suitable for your experience level. For your first dives, our team can help you choose classic cenote sites and experience the unique beauty of this underwater world.

Cenotes Available for Level 1

The route available to you depends on your certification, experience, site conditions and guide assessment. Some cenote passages require additional training, so your guide will help you choose an appropriate dive.
