Imagine slipping into the clear Caribbean waters and seeing the world’s largest fish glide peacefully through the sea. Snorkeling with whale sharks is a remarkable wildlife experience and a memorable way to discover the marine life of Mexico.
Whale sharks are filter-feeding fish that mainly eat plankton and other tiny organisms. Despite their impressive size, they are generally gentle animals. However, they are still wild creatures, and every encounter should take place respectfully, following the guidance of your experienced crew.
The whale shark season in the Mexican Caribbean generally runs from late May to mid-September, although exact dates and conditions vary from year to year. During this period, whale sharks may gather in waters around the northern Yucatán Peninsula, including areas near Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy, and Isla Holbox.
These encounters take place in the open sea, where conditions and wildlife activity can change daily. Whale shark sightings are not guaranteed, but when conditions are right, the experience can be truly special.
Your adventure begins with a boat trip to the designated whale shark area, generally departing from the Cancún region. Depending on sea conditions and the location of the animals, the journey may take around one to one and a half hours.
Once your crew locates whale sharks and confirms that conditions are suitable, your guide will explain how to enter the water and interact with the animals responsibly. The original trip format allows two guests in the water at a time for a short encounter, typically up to two minutes, subject to local regulations and the guide’s instructions.
You’ll have the opportunity to observe these impressive fish in their natural environment while helping minimise disturbance to the animals.
Depending on the departure arrangement available for your booking, pickup may be offered from Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Confirm your exact pickup location, transfer availability, and schedule with the DUNE Mexico team before booking.
Our bilingual guides will help you understand the experience and make the most of your time on the water.
Whale sharks are wild marine animals, and protecting their welfare is an important part of the experience. Please follow your guide’s instructions, maintain the required distance, never touch or chase the animals, and avoid blocking their path.
A life jacket is mandatory under the described trip arrangement. Wetsuit rental may be available as an alternative where permitted by the operator and local regulations; confirm the options before departure.
If you’re visiting Mexico during whale shark season, this is an opportunity to experience marine wildlife in a way you’ll remember long after your holiday. Join DUNE Mexico for a guided snorkeling trip and discover the wonder of seeing these magnificent fish in the wild.
